Barbers Farmhouse Mature
Cow's cheese • Hard, Cheddar • Vegetarian • British, Somerset

An honest mature cheddar, rich and mellow in flavour and a good all-round cheese for everyday use.
Ditcheat, Shepton Mallet
Yes, I know, it’s just a rectangular block of cheese, no fancy rind or ale wash here. This is an unashamedly good everyday cheddar, perfect for your hangry teenager or sliced up ready to hand to a troublesome – sorry, cherubic – toddler. It’s simple, you need this cheese in your fridge as an everyday staple. It’s affordable – after all, we are not all millionaires with an endless cheese budget (although we may long to be).
It’s made by the Barbers family, based in Ditcheat in Somerset who have been making cheese since 1833 (that’s about 200 years – I know you are trying to work it out) so they do know a thing or two about cheese making. I’ve been travelling down to their dairy for quite some time and – dare I say – they are a good bunch. When they had a problem with their accounting system they let me take the cheese unpaid, with a wave and ‘pay us next time’. But, the warehouse chaps are also lovely and deserve a mention – I really miss our chats and their smiley faces.
